Good Times, Great Games at the Toronto Game Jam!

Mochi Media was a sponsor for the Toronto Game Jam, referred to by veterans of the event as “TOJam”, which took place on May 13-15.

With 270 total attendees TOJam is one of the largest clicks and mortar game jams you will ever find. The efforts of the organizers, a team composed of independent game industry veterans of the Toronto scene (namely, from Get Set Games and Bigpants), have helped this event grow steadily for the past 6 years- they really do a great job in putting on the event and bring quite a bit of organization to something that is inherently fairly chaotic.

TOJam is a free event to attend, and the schedule is simple- make a game between Friday night and Sunday night, then submit it to win. People take breaks for food and sleep, as well as some conversation and game playing, but generally folks are working around the clock to make a great game.

Looks like someone just got their hands on some Mochi stickers!

Technologies at the jam vary, as do the game types. TOJam welcomes all types of developers, from newbies to game industry veterans. I am told that the games from the jam will be posted soon, so keep checking their site if you want to see them. Rise Japan Vol. 2 (and results from Vol. 1!)

Rise Japan Declared A Success!

Such a success, in fact, that there will be a second installment this Thursday, April 7th from 7pm-11pm. The first event at Kokoro Studio and Gallery Heist raised a grand total of $14,549.81! The organizers want to thank everyone who came out and supported a great cause. Here is a nice write-up of the event.

The Second Installment

Because so many artists offered generous donations to RISE JAPAN, the organizers planned another fundraiser art exhibition in San Francisco. The second event for RISE JAPAN: Japan Earthquake & Tsunami Fundraiser will be take place at ARC Studios & Gallery with more exciting art and projects from nation-wide artists.

Arc Studios & Gallery features ten newly renovated artist studios, a 1,000 sq. ft. art gallery, two small galleries, and an art education center, with VEGA Blue Bottle Coffee and Goodie Goody Cream & Sugar Cookies, located at 1246 Folsom Street, between 8th & 9th streets in San Francisco’s SOMA neighborhood. (3 blocks from the Civic Center BART station on Market Street)

Smashing Creative Roadblocks in Hamburg

Mochi’s “Mr. Shen” (aka Alexander Shen) presented at Casual Connect in Hamburg last month. He had a great turnout for his presentation, titled “Smashing Creative Roadblocks”, and really enjoyed talking about the creative process with the Casual Connect attendees (watch the video). In case you didn’t know, Mr. Shen is a pretty creative guy. He creates his own Flash games during his daily train rides to and from work, has produced comics, and even toys.

Why did Alexander chose this topic?

“The idea behind my presentation was simply to aid those developers and designers who find themselves staring at blank screens and pounding their heads for the next idea. Keep in mind I didn’t say “next million dollar idea”. The tips and tricks I offered are simply, and hopefully, ways of sparking some kind of innovation or idea in a designer’s head so they can actually get cranking on something. Sometimes the most impressive and interesting things come from the most random ideas and sometimes we just need a little push.”

Open Tok Sprint Hack in SF (For Those at GDC This Week)

For folks who are in San Francisco, or who are in town this week for the Game Developers Conference, we’re supporting a mixer / sprint hack on Thursday March 3rd in SOMA hosted by our friends at TokBox. There will be prizes and swag for participants. TokBox will also be showing off their spanky new Flash/as3 library at the event.

Mr. Shen Is T-Pain

Things were a bit slow in the office today since it’s a holiday weekend coming up. That meant we had some time to play around in the office and make some nonsense. Sebastien bought the I Am T-Pain iPhone app by Smule and Mr. Shen got all CRUNK with it.
