I'm with you on hating sound effects. I love writing music, but sound? Not so much.

Cakewalk Home Studio (now Sonar Home Studio) usually runs around $140 you get great drum, synth, orchestral VSTs and effects.

For most of my retro 8-bit sounds I use the Dream Station DXI- for orchestral I use Garritan Pocket Orchestra. For electronica, I use the Dimension LE, not to mention loads of free VSTIs (http://www.kvraudio.com/) and soundfonts (check out http://hammersound.net/).

Also get yourself the free Kore player- awesome instruments.

http://www.freesound.org/ hosts a ton of free sound effects. Just give them the credit they deserve and they're happy campers.

Hey Dogen, glad to hear you found particle illusions useful. What I end up doing is compressing the frames in flash separately from the project (right-click on the png in the flash library -> properties -> select JPG compression and uncheck "use default compression"-> set your own compression for that frame). It can be a bit tedious on larger sequences, but you almost never notice if the png is compressed to even 30-40%. This gets your files sizes for effects down to a reasonable rate. Hope this helps!

Great article, but here's a great free resource that I use: http://www.soundsnap.com/

It's a great library of sound effect and music loops that are free to use in your games, even for commercial purposes.

Thanks for the tip on particle illusions! I've been looking for a good particle engine that can be imported into Flash.

Any tips on getting the file size down? I've been experimenting with it and it appears that importing an avi to a movieclip timeline gives you the smallest files but I'd love to hear how you import things.
