When we invited the Flash games community to take a Flash Games Market Survey last July, we were seriously impressed by the huge participation levels that we received from the community. The goal of the survey was to compile the first study ever on what the Flash games market and industry looks like. We received over 1,100 developers and publishers complete the survey, and are really excited to finally share the results with all of you who paritcipated. THANK YOU for your help in creating this, and to our partners Adobe, FlashGameLicense, JayIsGames and NewGrounds for their help in getting this out there!
The survey had a ton of interesting results, including that:
- 97% of respondents were male
- 37% of respondents were both game developers and website publishers
- 24% of games were made in under 1 month, and 49% are made in 1-3 months
- 31% of developers have published 6 or more games
- … and a lot more!
As promised, we’re opening up all the results and sharing it back to the community that helped us put it all together. I’ve embedded the presentation below, and you can find a bit more analysis on our Flash Games Wiki.
What do you think of the results? What are your predictions for how the survey results would change for next year? Comment below!

Cool, I’ve been waiting for this. There’s nothing surprising in this paper but it’s good to know my assumptions about the flash gaming market are fairly accurate. If you find this of interest then I suggest also reading the Casual Games White Paper by IGDA.

Including game categories that developers produce, total earnings from different game categories etc.. would have been very informative as well.
