This week we’ve rolled out another great feature for you to keep your gamers engaged and coming back for more! If you’re currently using the Leaderboards Service in your game, you may have noticed a new “Medals” tab with possible awards.

Using the aggregate score history for all of the users that have submitted scores for your game, bronze, silver and gold medals are available on each of your leaderboards. These are determined by how well your user has scored relative to everyone else who has played. If a player gains a score with a top percentile, they receive a medal to recognize their achievement!

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate my scores?
The medals are based on the history of scores we’ve seen. Technically, medal thresholds for bronze, silver and gold are based off of multiples of the standard deviation from an approximated mean. In the case of leaderboards with a small set of scores, a scaling factor (based on the current highest score) is calculated to ensure all scores are achievable.
My game has a leaderboard installed but doesn’t show a medal. Why?
We need sufficient data to calculate when bronze, silver and gold medals should be awarded. If your game has not received many plays, you may not see the medal until it has reached a larger audience of gamers. Leaderboards that have fewer score submissions than the minimum sample sample size do not provide awards, no matter the score.
Can I manually set what score or percentile it takes to get a bronze, silver or gold?
Yes. Log into your developer dashboard, select your game, and click on leaderboard settings. From here, you should be able to manage the leaderboards in your game. The achievement settings can be set by selecting “edit” next to the name of your leaderboard (directly to the left of the daily / weekly / monthly / all-time tabs). Under the heading Type of Scoring, change the ‘Set Achievement Values’ setting from No to Yes in order to specify exact achievement levels there.

Can I turn off the medals in my games?
No, we currently don’t provide this functionality but will be enabling it in the near future. Stay tuned!
Where can I see all the medals that I’ve received across Mochi games?
We currently do not provide this functionality.

I think this addition is great but you guys need to quickly roll out a opt-out feature because this can really mess up peoples games that already have built-in achievements. But I still appreciate this addition, thanks Mochi <3!
Will it be possible to define your own medals except for just reaching a specific score? It would be really great if the mochi-api had support for custom achievements.
Cool feature, I agree customizable would be neat too but if you do make it so, don’t remove the ‘automatic’ medals as they are. It’s a great hands off way to make some older games more appealing again. Having said all that, some kinks might still be in the system – a couple of hacked scores can really really mess up the standard deviations. To get a silver on Powerpool, I need to get 4.2 Million. This didn’t change even after I removed the offending hacked score.
wouldnt the highscores (cheated highscores) fall outside of the 99 percentile, and therefore should not be counted in the avarages?
The underlying system is built to support custom achievements, but it may take a while for us to open that up to developers in a safe and easy way.
We’ll do some investigation over the next few days to see how deleted scores and outliers can affect the automatic medal placements.
achievements based on scores – is good. not so great as achievements based on others stuff(levels beated, etc).
but it cool system, problem is only that if i`m need use other params, i have to create hidden leaderboards for that. i think that should works…
Badim, don’t worry this is just the beginning of this feature :)
Great feature, thank you guys!
This is a fantastic feature and I for one would like to see it taken further. Microsoft are always on to us to increase the number of in-game achievements on our XBLA game so the public definitely wants this kind of thing. I would like to see extended to allow developer set achievements but well done in this first step.
Interesting idea but I’m not sure what would make this feature more appealing then a system like kongs.
Thanks for the great feedback guys!
@Invasion: The difference is that these achievements are not tied to the game being played on a specific site.
Awesome,
i hope later mochi will have more medals feature function more :) such as see all own medal,
creating own medal icon,etc :)
I think this is an excellent first step towards customizable “Xbox like” achievements.
Those will definitely be a must in the near future in order for flash games to remain competitive : mochiads should not fall behind!
Cool hope i can add that to my games =D
The high score’s from Globs doesn’t work!
@Ingrid: Could you please send a detailed description of what you mean by “doesn’t work”? I just tested the game and didn’t have any problems. Any detail on where you played the game would be helpful to diagnose the problem.
The highest scores are not added. “no scores yet today!” is display in your window. I’ve checked this in many sites: “juegosjuegos.com”; “freeworldgroup”, etc. etc-
It would be nice if you would add this to the publisher bridge functionality, so we could show a uaer all the medals he have earned, and propose some games he could play to gain medals.
Is there any intent to add access to the achievements to the object set returned from MochiScores.retrieveList() ?
Custom Leaderboards that use the Mochi service are out of luck on this feature, as far as I can tell.
There’s no way to do that yet. We’ll probably add that feature, but I don’t have a time line for that yet.
