I’m sure some people are a little sceptical about makeing a word game, but I personally just currently fell like doing something like this. It’s simpel to make but still fun! :D
I will try to make something relativly good to submit!
Sweet!
I was just writing down word related game ideas last night =D
QUESTION:
Are we allowed to use definitions of words from dictionary.com if we add the “powered by dictionary.com” in the menu?
Sorry, too add:
When I say “use” I mean that can we for example create a game where the player has to choose the right defenition of a word from a list of defenitions, and take the defenitions from dictionary.com?
Could we get a better word list?
I frankly find the supplied one completely useless.
It has names, words with other words after them, words with punctuation.
It’s not usable for word games at all, and I would think that it will be easy for dictionary.com to supply a more proper word list, that is suitable for word games.
What does
“Must be tagged with “dictionary.com””
mean?
Could you be more specific about how it must be “tagged” with that?
Just want to be clear, is this open to people in the UK? and where are the word lists? I can’t find any.
@Oskar: Yes, you can do that. However, Dictionary.com does not currently have an API to query their DB just yet. If you were to do that, you’d have to figure out a way to do it by yourself.
@Dino: We’re actually getting a revamped word list from them, which also strips out some of the dirty language as well. I’ll be replacing the old link with the new file when it’s up.
@Dino: When you create a game on MochiAds, you have to submit “tags”. They are like keywords you want to associate your game with. Make sure to write “dictionary.com” as one of the tags.
@FlashGameMaker: This contest is open to the UK. The word list can be found here (http://www.mochiads.com/dl/dictionarycom_assets.zip).
Would a typing game be classified as a word game?
I want to submit this type of game but only if it is considered.
Thanks
@Adam: That would surely count. You need to be generating those words to type from somewhere, right?
Hi All. Simple question… Maximum file size? Tx :o)
So we don’t even have to write their name or logo anywhere in the game itself, if we don’t use their word list?
Anyone have a god way to implement a text file into a flash program?
Would it maybe be a good idea if mochiads hosted the word list file in a fixed location, so games could load it from there, to keep swf size down.
Also I haven’t found a way to import a text file except by loading it externally, which means it would have to be hosted somewhere. I guess I can upload it to mochiads together with the swf?
@Dragonray: No maximum file size. Just use the same courtesy you would for any Flash game you’d create (i.e. a 30mb Flash game’s a bit too large).
@Dino: The only place you must place a “dictionary.com” tagline is if you are selected as one of the winners. Otherwise, if you don’t use their word list, you don’t have to use their name anywhere else.
@Dino: I’d suggest posting in the forums with this question. A lot of the devs have the technical know-how to lead you through this quickly.
The winning conditions state that you must include text stating “Dictionary.com presents” on the title screen if your game is selected as a winner. Is it also possible to have a primary sponsorship ( http://www.flashgamelicense.com/view_library.php?page=primary-sponsorships ) where there is a loading screen with a link to another portal site (and usually a “More Games” button with a link to the same site)? Or does one preclude the other?
@Petevasi: As described in the rules, “You’ll retain rights to resell site-locked versions of your winning game to other sites, but will require to keep the “Dictionary.com presents” tagline above your game’s title.” There is no splash screen/sequence to implement if you’re a winner, only a tagline on the title screen. You’ll be free to do whatever you’d like with the game.
Can the submission have a primary sponsor?
@Cavalcadegames: You sure can. The only thing that will happen if and when you win is that the title screen will be changed to say, “Dictionary.com presents [game title]“.
Can I put my submitted game on my website and on facebook, even if the contest isn’t over ?
@Eidern: Yes, yes you can!
