We’ve started testing a new ad format for your leaderboards: The Peel Away. More than just another placement, it’s primed for premium-priced roadblocks (i.e., when an advertiser buys all ads that run in a game for a specific period of time).

The ad teaser will appear in the upper right-hand corner of your leaderboard, without covering any part of it. When a user scrolls over the teaser, another small piece of it will be revealed. When the user clicks on the teaser, the ad will be revealed in full. Check it out in action here.

Here’s what it will look like:

First, the ad will appear as a teaser:

When a user scrolls over the teaser, a little more of the ad will be revealed:

(Teaser now says, “play games win gold”)

When a user clicks on the teaser, the whole ad will be revealed:

The user can click on the bottom left-hand corner to go back to the original leaderboard.

Some additional details:

  • Ad size: 300×250 pixels
  • Ad format: The ad will be enabled to accept all formats we currently support (static, rich media, and video).
  • Ad teaser size: 75×75 pixels
  • NOTE: To be eligible to run this ad, your game needs to be at least 500×400 pixels or larger.
  • Impressions will be counted for each time a user clicks to see the actual ad (not just the teaser).
  • The new ad format will automatically roll out to all MochiAds-approved, size-eligible games that use Mochi leaderboards.
  • FAQs:

Will the ad automatically show in all games (old and new) that incorporate the Mochi leaderboard?
Yes, as long as your game is approved by MochiAds, there’s enough space around your clip for the Peel Away graphics (see dimensions above), and you’re not using a transparent background for the leaderboard.

What if my leaderboard background is transparent?
Your game will not automatically show the ad, but you can enable it to show if it’ll look right in your game. Go to the dashboard of the game you’d like to access, and then click on “ad settings.” Then click “edit” next to “default ad settings.” Under “leaderboard ads,” you can select “Peel Away ads.” If the ad looks alright in your game, you can keep it in the game; otherwise, you can go back to this page to deactivate the ad.

Can I get this ad format without implementing the leaderboard?
Peel Away ads will only show in games using the MochiAds leaderboard. Peel away ads don’t have a public API at this time.

    Wait, I can’t see anything.
Clear your cache, and you should be able to view the ad.

How do I disable Peel Away ads?
You can access your Peel Away ads settings in two locations in your MochiAds dasboard: From your “ad settings” and “leaderboard” tabs in your game dashboard. Go to the dashboard of the game you’d like to access, and then click on “ad settings.” Then click “edit” next to “default ad settings.” Under “leaderboard ads,” you can select “deactivate ads” to turn off the Peel Away ad.

From your “leaderboard” tab, click on the right-hand side “leaderboard ad settings” link. Under “leaderboard ads,” you can select “deactivate ads” to turn off the Peel Away ad.

Why am I seeing more skipped ad impressions now?
Some of you may be noticing an increase in skipped ad impressions due to the new Peel Away ad format. Click here if you’d like to learn more.

We’re pretty excited about this. What do you think? :)
